Grammar

Prepositions with Dative and Accusative (Two-Way Prepositions)

Some prepositions change the case depending on whether you're describing movement (Accusative) or location (Dative).

1. in + Dative (Location):

  • Ich arbeite in einem Büro. (I work in an office.) — das Büro → einem Büro

2. in + Accusative (Movement):

  • Ich gehe in das (ins) Büro. (I'm going into the office.) — das Büro stays das

Common 'Work' Prepositions:

  • an (at): Ich bin am (an dem) Schreibtisch. (I am at the desk.)
  • auf (on): Das Dokument liegt auf dem Tisch. (The document is on the table.)
