Grammar

Imperative mood in official instructions

German forms use the formal imperative (Sie-form) for instructions. It looks like the regular Sie-form but feels more direct.

Formation: infinitive verb (moved to front) + Sie

Instruction Meaning
Füllen Sie das Formular aus. Fill out the form.
Tragen Sie Ihren Namen ein. Enter your name.
Unterschreiben Sie hier. Sign here.
Lassen Sie dieses Feld frei. Leave this field blank.
Kreuzen Sie zutreffendes an. Check the applicable box.

Note: separable verb prefixes (aus-, ein-, an-) still move to the end, just as in normal sentences.
