Grammar

Purposes with 'um... zu' and Recommendations with 'sollte'

At the B1 level, you start using more complex sentence structures to express purposes and give advice.

1. um... zu + infinitive (in order to) This structure is used when the subject of both parts of the sentence is the same.

  • Ich spare Energie, um Geld zu sparen. (I save energy in order to save money.)
  • Wir trennen Müll, um die Umwelt zu schützen. (We separate waste in order to protect the environment.)

2. Recommendations with 'sollte' (should) Sollte is the Konjunktiv II form of sollen. It is used to give polite advice or make recommendations.

  • Man sollte weniger Plastik kaufen. (One should buy less plastic.)
  • Wir sollten mehr Bio-Produkte essen. (We should eat more organic products.)
