Instructions with 'man' and Sequencing Adverbs

When writing or reading recipes, the impersonal pronoun man is frequently used to give general instructions.

1. The pronoun 'man' (one / you / people) Man is always used with the third-person singular (er/sie/es form).

  • Man nimmt drei Eier. (One takes / You take three eggs.)
  • Man kocht die Nudeln 10 Minuten. (One cooks / You cook the pasta for 10 minutes.)

2. Sequencing Adverbs To describe a process step-by-step, use these adverbs. Note that they often move to the front of the sentence, causing the verb to come next (V2 position).

  • Zuerst schneidet man... (First, one cuts...)
  • Dann brät man... (Then, one fries...)
  • Danach gibt man... (After that, one adds...)
  • Schließlich serviert man... (Finally, one serves...)
